Windsor Castle is the shortest of the popular day trips out of London — about 25 miles west, typically 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on the time of day. It's the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and still an official residence, which means opening times and the Changing of the Guard schedule vary by day and are worth checking before you travel.
Windsor town itself gets heavy footfall, especially near the castle entrance and Windsor Great Park, and short-stay parking close to the castle is limited and expensive.
