Chauffeur Visit to Windsor Castle From London

A stone country house above clipped lawns and hedges — Chauffeur Visit to Windsor Castle From London — P5 Chauffeurs journal

Windsor Castle is the shortest of the popular day trips out of London — about 25 miles west, typically 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on the time of day. It's the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and still an official residence, which means opening times and the Changing of the Guard schedule vary by day and are worth checking before you travel.

Windsor town itself gets heavy footfall, especially near the castle entrance and Windsor Great Park, and short-stay parking close to the castle is limited and expensive. A chauffeured car drops you at the entrance, waits or repositions, and picks you up again without you having to think about a parking meter running out mid-tour.

Timing Around the Castle

The State Apartments, St George's Chapel — the site of several recent royal weddings and Queen Elizabeth II's final resting place — and the castle precincts typically take two to three hours to see properly. If the Changing of the Guard is happening on your chosen day, arriving 30-45 minutes early secures a decent viewing spot along the route.

Cost and Booking

A half-day round trip to Windsor with waiting time typically runs from around £140-£190 in an executive saloon, making it one of the more affordable day trips simply because of the shorter distance. The price is fixed and agreed before you travel. Call 020 8129 4999 and we'll check the castle's opening hours for your date as part of confirming the booking.

Combining With Legoland or Eton

Families often combine Windsor Castle with Legoland Windsor, which is a five-minute drive away, and it's easy to walk across the river to Eton and back within the same visit. If you want both the castle and Legoland in one day, we'd suggest allowing a full day rather than a half-day.

Questions, answered.

How far in advance should we check the Changing of the Guard schedule?

It doesn't run every day and the schedule changes seasonally, so we'd suggest checking a few days before your visit — we can help confirm this when you book.

Is Windsor Castle open every day?

It's usually open most days but closes periodically for state occasions, so it's worth confirming for your specific date before travelling.

Can we fit Windsor and Legoland into the same day?

Yes, they're a five-minute drive apart, but doing both properly needs a full day rather than a half-day — let us know when booking so we can plan the timing.
