Chauffeur Day Trip From London to Oxford

The dome of the Radcliffe Camera in Radcliffe Square, Oxford — Chauffeur Day Trip From London to Oxford — P5 Chauffeurs journal

Oxford sits roughly 60 miles northwest of London, and the drive along the M40 usually takes 90 minutes to two hours. It's one of the most requested day trips we run, partly because the city rewards slow walking — the colleges, the Bodleian Library, Christ Church Meadow — and a chauffeured day gives you that time without a train schedule pushing you to leave early.

Central Oxford has narrow streets and restricted access around the colleges, so a car dropping you close to Christ Church or the Radcliffe Camera and then holding elsewhere works better than trying to park nearby yourself. We know which streets allow a brief stop for luggage or wheelchair access and which don't.

A Typical Itinerary

We generally suggest arriving by 10.30am, giving you time at Christ Church College — the dining hall used as inspiration for the Harry Potter films — before it gets busy with tour groups after midday. The Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Camera are a short walk from there, and Blackwell's bookshop and the covered market are good for an hour of browsing before heading back.

What It Costs

A London-to-Oxford round trip with several hours of waiting time typically runs from around £220-£300 in an executive saloon, agreed as a fixed price before you set off. There's no meter running while the car waits and no surge charge if the M40 is heavy on the way home. Call 020 8129 4999 to book and confirm the plan for the day.

Combining With the Cotswolds

Oxford sits close enough to the edge of the Cotswolds that some clients extend the day to include Burford or the Rollright Stones on the way back, rather than doing them as a separate trip. If that interests you, mention it when booking — it typically adds two to three hours rather than a full extra day.

Questions, answered.

Can we get inside the college used in the Harry Potter films?

Christ Church College's dining hall and staircase, which inspired scenes in the films, are open to visitors with a paid ticket, though access can be restricted during university events — we recommend checking opening times before your visit.

How much walking is involved in central Oxford?

The main sights — Christ Church, the Bodleian, the Radcliffe Camera, and the covered market — are all within about a 15-minute walk of each other, so it's manageable but not step-free throughout.

Is it worth combining Oxford with the Cotswolds in one day?

It's doable if you keep Oxford to a half-day and add one or two Cotswolds villages, but for a fuller Cotswolds visit we'd suggest treating them as separate trips.
