Accessibility for Wheelchair Users and Passengers With Reduced Mobility

A quiet garden courtyard at a historic London hospital — Accessibility for Wheelchair Users and Passengers With Reduced Mobility — P5 Chauffeurs journal

We'd rather be straightforward about this than let anyone book blind and be caught out on the day. Our standard fleet — Mercedes E-Class and S-Class saloons and V-Class MPVs — is not wheelchair-accessible in the sense of taking a wheelchair unfolded with the passenger seated in it. If that's what you need, tell us at booking so we can be clear about what's possible rather than promising something we can't deliver.

What our standard vehicles do well is reduced-mobility transfers where the passenger can transfer from a wheelchair into the car seat, with the folded wheelchair stowed in the boot. Drivers are used to this, are patient about the extra time it takes, and will assist with the transfer if you're comfortable with that — otherwise they'll simply wait while a carer or companion assists.

What to Tell Us at Booking

Whether the passenger can transfer independently or needs assistance, whether a folding wheelchair or mobility scooter needs to be stowed and its approximate size, and whether extra time should be built into the pickup. The more specific you are, the better we can match the right vehicle and allow the right amount of time — a V-Class generally gives more room for this than a saloon.

What We Don't Currently Offer

We don't operate a wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) with a ramp or lift that takes a passenger seated in their wheelchair without transferring. If that's a hard requirement, we'll say so honestly rather than take the booking and disappoint you on the day — and we're happy to point you toward specialist WAV operators in London if that's what you need.

Booking With Confidence

For transfer-capable passengers, this works exactly like any other booking — a fixed price agreed upfront, typically £45-£90 for a standard transfer, with extra time simply built into the schedule rather than charged as an add-on. Call 020 8129 4999 and describe the passenger's needs and we'll tell you plainly whether we're the right fit for that specific journey.

Questions, answered.

Can you take a wheelchair user who needs to stay seated in the wheelchair for the whole journey?

Not with our standard fleet — our vehicles require the passenger to transfer into the car seat, with the wheelchair folded and stowed. If a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with a ramp is a hard requirement, we'll point you toward a specialist operator.

Will the driver help with the transfer from wheelchair to car seat?

Drivers can assist if you're comfortable with that, or simply wait while a carer or companion helps. Tell us the preference at booking so the driver knows what's expected.

Does a mobility scooter fit in the boot?

Depends on the size and whether it folds — tell us the make and dimensions when booking and we'll confirm whether a saloon boot fits it or whether we need to put you in a V-Class instead.
